Cycling’s most prestigious, most sought-after, most celebrated Grand Tour is under way, and we’re dedicating this issue of Bicycling Bits to Tour de France 2016. This year’s race promises to be every bit as exciting as the cyclists and their machines.

The 2 teams we’re rooting for are Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka and AG2R La Mondiale Pro Cycling Team, for obvious reasons…they ride Cervelo and Focus respectively!

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons :

1. Wearing a bike helmet reduces the risk of serious head and brain injury by 85%. Helmets should be worn during every ride, no matter how short.

2. Cuts, bruises and even broken bones will heal, but damage to your brain can be permanent. Even a low speed fall can result in serious head injury.

3. During a fall or crash, a helmet absorbs much of the force of impact that would otherwise be directed to the head. Thick plastic foam inside the hard outer shell of a helmet cushions the blow.
